What’s NEWs at the Theater Barn?
Our new season begins with this production of Round and Round the Garden followed by Mrs. Warren’s Profession, They’re Playing Our Song and Nuts. All of these shows have never been performed here in the past. We also have some new directors (to the Theater Barn) behind the scenes. Debbie Levin, Larry Schneider and Frank Gaffney join Theater Barn veteran Sherry Asch to direct this diverse group of shows.
Our Theater Barn Kids program continues with Annie, Jr with the addition of a beginner class for 8 and 9 year olds. This new program was added in response to a large number of people on the waiting list for the workshop.
With the addition of a new baby Missy has passed the torch on the Theater for Young Audience program. Alicia Dempster, who directed the critically acclaimed production of Parade last season will step in as the new director of the program. Pinkalicious and How I Became a Pirate are this year’s offerings.
After a very successful trial run in June, Word Around Town became the newest addition to the season schedule. This theatrical presentation of original poetry will take place in December and again in June.
Watch our website for updates on these and all of the rest of our popular programs including Whose Barn is it Anyway?- A Night of Improv, new play readings, A Night of One Acts and playwrights discussion groups.
Hats off to the new season!
Here at the Theater Barn we are excited to be able to offer a wide variety of offerings for the entire family. This summer featured the premiere of Word Around Town, an evening of original poetry arranged in a theatrical presentation format. This program was such a success that we have added it to the schedule for next season.
Developing Your Acting Career, this popular six week acting course for adults is taught by Susan Grace Cohen, professor for more than ten years at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts Film, Drama & TV Divisions. Currently in the middle of the summer session we are looking forward to offering more opportunities to work with Susan in our next season.
Our 45th Season draws to a close with the production of The Unforgettable Whatshisname. This comedy by Myles Gansfried was a favorite in our play reading series two years ago and was chosen to be produced as our “Black Box” production this year.

2011 promises to be an exciting year here at the Theater Barn. We stand poised at the half way point of our 45th Season catching our breath after a very busy end of the year. As the New Year begins we have a number of offerings to break up the boredom of a long winter. Here are the highlights.
January began with something for the little ones…our Theater for Young Audience performance of Blues Clues Live: Blue’s Birthday Party. Watch this website for more Theater for Young Audiences offerings later in the year.
Later in January you enjoyed some comic relief with the Role in the Hay Players in another night of Improv fun in Whose Barn is it Anyway? You never know what will happen in one of these shows with suggestions from you the audience fueling the scenes. They'll be back in May for the next installment!
Don’t want to sit through a long play? Well how about joining us for a Night of One Acts featuring 6 short one act plays by Christopher Durang. The Night of One Acts was a popular addition to the schedule last year so we decided to offer it again. Performances are two weekends at the end of January and beginning of February.
Are the kids driving you nuts? How about bringing them down to work off some of that extra energy? The next Theater Barn Kids workshop begins mid-February. Check out our website for more information and registration forms.
Ready to sink your chops into a hearty musical drama? Join us for our main stage production of Parade. The tragic, true story of the trial and lynching of a man wrongly accused of murder is brought to emotional and theatrical life in this Tony Award-winning play set in Atlanta in 1913.
See you at the theater!
Welcome to the start of the 45th season here at the Ridgefield Theater Barn. We have come a long way from those humble beginnings of putting on shows in space available to eventually securing an old converted dairy barn from the town. Reminiscent of the old Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland movies, “We’ve got a barn…let’s put on a show!,” the Theater Barn was born. Move Over Mrs. Markham was the first show produced in the current building back in 1979. Patrons entered through an old barn door and sat on fold-up metal chairs and benches. Shows could only be done in the spring, summer and fall because there was little heat and no air conditioning; sets were simple and lighting was minimal.
Fast forward to 2010… you sit on banquet chairs at tables with candles after enjoying a nice dinner in air conditioned comfort, looking forward to enjoying The Prisoner of Second Avenue. You look ahead at the season brochure and see 30 weekends of performances including interesting shows for children and adults, Improv performances and classes, Theater Barn Kids workshops and performances, play readings, discussion groups, black box theater events, weekends of one-act plays and adult acting classes with renowned instructors. Tonight you entered through a new Gallery containing handicapped accessible rest rooms right here on the theater level; there is a box office, a tech booth on the second floor and a fully finished rehearsal/class/meeting space on the lower level complete with floor to ceiling mirrors to work on dance routines.
2010 and beyond…As we begin our 45th year we are committed to the purpose stated in our certificate of incorporation, “to bring enriching, entertaining and affordable theater to Ridgefield and the surrounding area.” Come back and take advantage of our many and varied offerings. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.
